On Tuesday the Mustangs traveled to PAL Stadium in San Jose to face off against the Carlmont Scots in a Division 1 CCS Semifinal game.
In the top of the first after the Mustangs Pitcher Brittany Prock struck out the first batter. The Scots number two hitter drove the ball in the left center gap for a double, however she tried to stretch it to a triple and was gunned out at third. This play set the tone for the Mustangs defense for most of the game. In the bottom of the first, Julie Davis led off the Mustang inning with a triple and scored on Nancy Liu’s safety squeeze. In the third Davis stepped to the plate with one out and showed why she was the De Anza divisions Most Valuable Player as she hit a homerun to right. From that moment on both pitcher just kept mowing down batter after batter until the seventh. In the Carlmont 7th, the leadoff hitter reached on an error followed by an infield single. The Scots then bunted to move the tying runs into scoring position but the Mustangs threw the ball into right and Carlmont had its first run. The next batter followed with a base hit which scored two and the Mustangs saw the lead they had built from inning 1 erased. The Mustangs were able to close out the inning without any more damage and returned to the plate to see if they had anymore late inning heroics left inside them. Catcher Elena Murray led off the inning with a walk. Nicky Kirk then stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter and flied out to right so with one out Davis came to the plate and singled to center. It looked like the Mustangs were going to do it again but that was it for the Mustangs rally and the Scots went on to win 3-2 and now advance to the finals to play San Benito. The Mustangs managed only 4 hits and Davis had three of them but once again the Mustangs fell short of their goal or reaching the championship game. The Mustangs finished the season with an impressive 20-7 record and now have to wait another year for the opportunity to reach their ultimate goal. The good news is the Mustangs return 8 starters from this years team. |
